Common Scams In Digital Fraud Landscape

ATM Scam

What is it?

Fraudster manipulates the ATM’s keypad and card slot to trap your card, making it seem like a technical error. Meanwhile, fraudsters pretend to help but are actually waiting to steal your card and withdraw your money once you leave.

How It Works?

  • Tampering with the ATM: Scammers apply glue, tape, or a thin film to ATM buttons, making them unresponsive. They repeatedly press the cancel button, tricking the machine into holding your card.
  • Fooling the Victim: As you struggle, 2–3 scammers enter the ATM booth, acting like other users. They pretend to help, suggesting you return after 2–3 days to get your card from the bank.
  • Stealing Your Card & Money: After you leave, the fraudsters remove the trapped card from the ATM. If they saw you enter your PIN earlier, they withdraw your money immediately!

Prevention Strategies:

  • Check if the buttons feel sticky or unresponsive—this could be a sign of tampering. If something seems off, use another machine.
  • Always shield the keypad when entering your PIN to prevent “shoulder surfing.”
  • If your card is retained and stuck, don’t walk away. Call your bank while standing near the ATM to report the issue and block your card.
  • Set up SMS or email alerts to get notified of any withdrawals in real-time.
