Common Scams In Digital Fraud Landscape

Extortion

What is it?

Extortion scams involve criminals using threats to force you into paying money or taking specific actions by manipulating your fears or vulnerabilities. Scammers claim to have damaging information about you (e.g., private photos, personal details, or confidential activities) and threaten to expose it unless you meet their demands.

How It Works?

  • Threats and Blackmail: The scammer contacts you, often claiming to have sensitive or embarrassing information about you. They threaten to release or make the information public unless you pay a ransom.
  • False Claims: In some cases, the scammer may fabricate evidence or use real but harmless information to manipulate you into believing their threat is legitimate.
  • Ransom Demands: The scammer demands payment, often in untraceable methods like cryptocurrency or gift cards, to prevent the release of the supposed compromising information.
  • Escalation: If you don’t comply, the scammer may escalate their threats, making it seem as though they are actively planning to release the information or cause harm.

Prevention Strategies:

  • If you receive an extortion threat, do not respond, and do not give in to the demands. Engaging with the scammer may lead to further manipulation.
  • Immediately report the extortion attempt to the police, your local authorities, and any relevant online platforms. In many cases, these threats are illegal and punishable by law.
  • Protect your personal information and accounts with strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA). This helps prevent hackers from gaining access to your data.
  • Paying the extortionist does not guarantee that they will stop or that your data will not be released. It can also encourage the scammer to target you or others again.
  • If the threat involves sensitive personal content, seek help from trusted friends, family, or professionals to navigate the situation. Support may also be available through victim assistance programs.
